Western Serbia food tour
Šumadija, aka Serbian Tuscany, is a renowned Serbian region abounding with mountains, hills, pastures, wells, springs, rivers, and lakes. This is the place where you’ll wake up to the chirp of larks, crow of roosters, and smell of breakfast! In order to ensure full awakening, and as an aperitif before breakfast, plum rakija, at least dozen years old, is served. As for breakfast… Well, let’s just say that you can expect Serbian cereals (1500kcal) or Serbian breakfast (2000kcal), followed by rakija once again, understandably, to stimulate metabolism.
This area is extremely affluent in fruit, therefore numerous orchards can be found along the road. We will never pass on a chance to pull over and pick an apple, apricot, peach, plum, cherry, or grapes, directly off a tree branch. What a healthy snack prior to lunch!
Did you know that is 90% of world raspberries are produced in western Serbia?
And for lunch… Wait for it… Organic steroids!
Roasted pork – it is common knowledge that the best roasted pork comes right from this Serbian region; Lamb meat from under the sač (a large clay lid, over which ashes and live coals are placed) – find out why this dish is known as the queen of meet; veal in milk – for the gourmets with a discriminating taste; rolled goat lamb meat – deboned goat lamb rolled with smoked goat cheese; sarma and podvarak – the queens of winter sports. All of these, soft and luscious, simply melt in your mouth, leading you into the state of bliss and pure hedonistic pleasure. Exquisite wine happens to be there, too, contributing to the perfect harmony of this region. The food and wine have been together for centuries there, thus cannot be consumed one without another.
